In today's lesson we learnt that photographs can linger into peoples brains because they can stare at a photo for as long as they want so it has a different affect because they look at it a lot so they can get different views on it and the meanings. Where as if it was a video on TV they wouldn't of been able to stop it to look at it longer so it would mean something different.
We next got a photo that had been cropped and we had to focus of the denotations and connotations of this photo.
the denotations are:
a soldier
building
rubble
generator
wires
gun
helmet
windows
the connotations are:
war
earthquake
bomb
disaster
rescue

three points on photo journalism
1. history
1818-the patent for the Kodak roll-film camera
1839- the invention of the daguerreotype
1840-the first photographic camera
1913-the first leica camera
1975-the first digital camera
2. photo techs
In lesson I went on Sim cam and had to try and play around with the different aperture and shutter, the different settings where
shutter Aperture
1/4 sec f/2.8
1/8 secs f/4
1/15secs f/5.6
1/30secs f/8
1/60secs f/11
1/125secs f/16
1/250secs f /22
1/500secs
I had to try and find the right setting to make the photo the same as the one on the left hand side. It was hard because every time you changed each setting something wouldn't be right.
If you chose a small shutter the Aperture is is larger because the lens is smaller so is letting less light in. where as if you chose a large shutter the Aperture is smaller because the lens is bigger so is letting more light in.
3. semiotics and representation
Renee Magritte-'the treachery of images'
'this is not a pipe'
He calls it this because it is not a pipe it is just an image and isn't the really thing. The images represent reality.
Semiotics- is the way we read signs or images (sign systems allows media to be taken apart to show how meanings are created.
A sign, when it becomes noticed acts to signify meaning i.e. it acts as a signifier.
the meaning which is never more than an idea is called the signified.
Denotation- What you see
Connotation- What the audience personal view on the image and what the associations the images has to the viewer
